See Some Of Brazil's History At The Village Of Marechal Deodoro

Marechal Deodoro makes a great day trip from Maceio. Just 20 kilometers from the center of Maceio, this quaint colonial town offers a trip into the past, along with lots of great shopping opportunities.

With its cobbled streets and perfectly preserved old buildings, Marechal Deodoro takes you back into Brazil's colonial past. But, it's more than just a tourist trap. Marechal Deodoro is a real town, with real people who go about their lives in the 21st century just like anybody else. It's just the town itself that has been preserved.

The center of Marechal Deodoro is called "Praca Pedro Paulinho," and it is full of rich architectural marvels that have not been sullied by modern building. These sights include the Convento de Sao Francisco, an old convent that has been turned into a museum. From outside, it doesn't look like much, but inside you will find art, statues and artifacts from Brazil's rich religious history. It's like being transported back to old Europe, with a little tropical flair added.

Another museum that Marechal Deodoro is famous for is the Igreja de Santa Maria Magdalena, an old 18th century building full of artifacts from the area's history. You can also check out the birthplace of Brazil's first president and the town's namesake, Marechel Deodoro. Deodoro is one of Brazil's most colorful historical characters, and his birthplace has become a museum full of information about the country's history.

This tiny village also offers some great shopping opportunities. You can buy local crafts from the small shops on the Rua Dr Ladislam Netto in the middle of town. Marechal Deodoro is famous for its lace, and you can buy high quality lace goods at a bargain. It is some of the best lace work you'll find anywhere in Brazil.

Close to Marechal Deodoro, you'll find the tiny fishing village of Massagueira. Massagueira makes a great stop along the way, and it is known particularly for its pretty ocean views and delicious seafood. It makes a great stop on your way when you are returning to Maceio.

It's easy to get to Marechal Deodoro from Maceio. There is a bus that leaves from the center of Maceio and takes you right to the heart of the village. While there are no big hotels or resorts to stay in at Marechal Deodoro, there is a quaint and friendly guesthouse called Capitaes De Areia where you can stay for around $10 a night. It is located on the Rua Vermehla, right in the middle of town, and you can find more information at its website, www.capitaesdeareia.com.
