In Maceio, you can experience Brazil's nationwide Carnaval, which is usually held in February or March. However, Maceio has its own mini-Carnaval held every year in November, called Maceio Fest. Besides Maceio Fest, the biggest Maceio cultural event is "Festa Junina," or the Saint John Festival. This is an old Portuguese holiday that celebrates the summer solstice, which in Brazil is actually in mid-winter. The official day of the festival is June 24th, but the dancing, fireworks, bonfires and partying goes on for most of the month. This is a great time to take a trip to Maceio. Like Brazil's Carnival, the festival can get out of control, with wild costumes, dancing, drinking and revelry.
You wouldn't want to visit Maceio without checking out one of its most unique and interesting cultural events, the "Boi do Carnaval," or "Carnival Bull." This is a huge percussion concert that is known to hypnotize its audience, with a frenzy of drums and counter rhythms. It is a festival in the tradition of other northeastern Brazil celebrations, like "the Bear" and "the Cowboy."
One of the cultural events that you can experience around the Christmas holiday in Maceio is the "Guerreiro," a gigantic dance celebration that is a mix of folk tradition and old European festivals. It is also known as the Warrior Dance. It involves participants dressing up in a wide variety of colorful costumes and doing a stunningly choreographed dance. The Guerreiro is a unique event, and it is not just for the tourists. Like many Maceio cultural events, this traditional dance has religious significance, and the dancers wear mirrored hats which represent Maceio's many famous cathedrals.
There are a number of other unique dances that you can enjoy in Maceio, where the streets turn into a giant party. Among these are the "quadrilha," a dance based on the French "quadrille." There is also the "coco de roda," which like Guerreira, is based on spiritual observances.

The fandango is based on legends and stories of the sea, set to the music of ukulele's, guitars and other traditional stringed instruments.
