Come For The Fantastic Beaches, Stay For The Unique Maceio Cultural Attractions

Maceio is much more than pretty beaches. The culture and history of Maceio is another reason to visit this famous seaside city in northeastern Brazil.

Maceio is full of wonderful, old colonial buildings that have been preserved beautifully. Maceio has a colorful history, starting with its importance as a port, and then growing as it became the state capital. There are parts of Maceio where you can walk around the old streets and see the elegant buildings that remain from the city's past.

In particular, the old churches and cathedrals of Maceio make a great stop on your tour of the city. There is the Church of Bom Jesus dos Martirios, a chapel from the 19th century which is a mix of several prominent architectural styles, such as classic, baroque and neo-gothic. There is also the Nossa Senhora do Livramento church which is one of the most visited in all of northeastern Brazil. You also won't want to miss the city's Metropolitan Cathedral, one of the major sightseeing stops for everybody who visits Maceio. In addition to the city's churches, you'll find two old colonial theaters worth checking out, the Deodoro Theatre and Gustavo Leite Theatre.

One of the best ways to experience Maceio architecture is to hang out in the Jaragua District. This area of town used to be the biggest port in the region. Now, all the old warehouses and buildings have been turned into restaurants, bars and nightclubs for people to enjoy. Spend a Friday or Saturday night in Jaragua and you get to see wonderful architecture and enjoy dancing, drinking and hanging out.

Being the cultural capital of the area, Maceio has some outstanding museums worth checking out. Probably the most popular is the Theo Brandao Museum, a huge collection of native, historical and folklore artifacts from the area. There are also pieces from Africa, Central America and old Europe as well. But, the highlights of the museum are the pieces you will only find in northeastern Brazil.

The city has several art museums, including the Pierre Chalita Museum where you can see works of art from Brazil's past, and the Brazilian Art Museum, which specializes in modern artists and exhibitions.

Even better than the colonial buildings and works of art you'll find in Maceio is the music and dancing. Every part of Brazil has its own unique music and dance styles, influenced by the many people who have shaped Brazilian culture. Any time of year, there are dances, celebrations and events going on for you to enjoy, and you can always find some great dancing in any of the city's clubs. Like the rest of Brazil, Maceio celebrates Carnaval in February and March, but it also has its own Carnaval called "Maceio Fest" in November. There is always something going on in Maceio.

The beaches are a great reason to visit Maceio, but don't forget to take in some of the cultural sights as well. There is a lot to see and do.
